Abstract

529,432. Distilling alcohol. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. May. 31, 1939, No. 16071. Convention date, June 6, 1938. [Class 32] Crude aqueous organic compounds derived from olefines, such as alcohols, ketones, or esters, containing impurities such as polymers, are purified by distilling with an auxiliary liquid capable of forming an azeotrope therewith and immiscible with water but miscible' with the impurities. The distillate is condensed to form two layers, an aqueous layer and a layer containing the auxiliary liquid and impurities. Crude alcohol from olefines, e.g. by the flash distillation of propylene in sulphuric acid, is fed from a tank 1 to a dehydration column 3 after admixture with the auxiliary liquid introduced at 4. The vapour from the column 3 is condensed in condenser 6. Part of the condensate is refluxed at 7 and the rest passes to the stratifier 9. The lower water layer is removed by the pipe 10. The upper layer consisting of auxiliary liquid and impurities is passed to the column 12 where the impurities are distilled off and the auxiliary liquid returned to the crude alcohol at 4 by a pipe 17. The purified alcohol from the column 3 is passed to a finishing still 20 where the last of impurities are distilled off. Specifications 387,589 and 396,605 are referred to.
