Abstract
529,214. Sewing-machines. FAIRWEATHER. W. C. (Singer Manufacturing Co.). May 25, 1939, No. 15498. [Class 112] A sewing-machine adapted to operate through a predetermined cycle and then stop automatically is provided with means whereby the stop mechanism may be rendered inoperative so that the cycle is repeated ; in particular, in a button-attaching machine, the stitches for a fourhole button may be formed in two separate groups or in a continuous group with a crossover stitch, and a two-hole button may be attached with the same total number of stitches as the four-hole button or with half that number. In the button-attaching machine shown in underneath plan, the button-clamp 29 is vibrated longitudinally of the machine, in stitching through a pair of holes, by an arcuate cam-actuated lever 25 adjustably connected to a link 28 and is moved laterally, in shifting from one pair of holes of a four-hole button to the other, by a lever 38, pivoted at 39, connected to a cam-actuated lever 33 by a pin 36 engaging slots in both these levers and movable along the slots by manual control means; one extreme position of the pin 36 is coaxial with the pivot of the lever 33, as shown, this position producing no shift of the buttonclamp and being used for two-hole buttons, while the other position is determined by an adjustable stop 42. The cam 19 actuating the lever 25 operates the button-clamp for the production of a cycle of eight stitches, concluding with a tying stitch, in each half-revolution, and the cam 31 actuating the lever 33 is adapted to shift the button-clamp at the end of each halfrevolution. The stop-gear comprises a sliding member 44 engageable with a lug 48 on the handwheel 8 but spring-pressed to the disengaged position; the other end of the member 44 is arranged to abut against an arm 52 having slight swinging movement on a pin 53 by which it can be depressed clear of the member 44 against a spring by a push-button. The arm 52 has an upwardlyextending pin near its end, normally riding on the under side of the cam 31 and adapted to spring into a hole 58 in this cam at the end of each half revolution thereof ; when the pin enters one of these holes 58, the arm 52 moves into line with the member 44 and continued rotation of the cam causes the arm 52 to move the member 44 to stopping position ; depression of the arm 52 allows the member 44 to spring back and free the wheel 8 for re-starting. In order that two successive cycles of stitches may be sewn without stopping, as in attaching a fourhole button with a cross-over stitch or a large two-hole button, one' of the holes 58 may be obstructed by a plate 60 pivoted at 61 on the cams and actuated by a finger-piece beneath the cams ; this plate is spring-pressed against the cam 31 to hold it frictionally in either position.
