528,963. Controlling aircraft. FAIREY, C. R. March 31, 1939, No. 10136. [Class 4] In order to avoid instability in multiengined aircraft owing to the failure or fall in speed of one of the engines, the ignition systems of corresponding engines on opposite sides of the fuselage are so interconnected that failure of an engine automatically renders inoperative the ignition system of the corresponding engine on the other side. As shown, an aircraft 12 has two engines 10, 11 provided respectively with centrifugal switches 17, 18, magnetos 13, 14, ignition switches 15, 16, switches 19, 20 adapted to be closed when the engines are at two-thirds throttle or over, and over-riding switches 21, 22. The connections are arranged so that when a centrifugal switch 17 and a switch 19 of one engine are closed, the primary of the magneto of the other engine is short-circuited. The throttleoperated switches 19, 20 remain open until the throttle is opened to two-thirds its full extent and until the centrifugal switches are already opened. The over-riding switches 21, 22 which, when opened, prevent the ignition systems from being short circuited, may be controlled manually or automatically by connection to means such as an air-speed indicator, or oil-pressure indicator, or means responsive to height or time.
