Abstract
528,902. Grinding screw-threads. COVENTRY GAUGE & TOOL CO., Ltd., and HARLEY, S. J. March 8, 1939, Nos. 7479 and 7480. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] Screw threads are ground either by the plunge cut method or by generation in a machine that employs a number of grinding- wheels acting on bar stock fed step by step through one or a number of rotary work spindles. Bar stock a is fed step by step by means associated with a hollow spindle band is ground by a wheel c on a slide d and the finished part is dressed by a wheel f. The first wheel may grind to diameter and the second wheel may form-grind, or one wheel may rough grind and the other finish grind the thread. In these cases a separate parting- tool is employed. In the machine shown in Fig. 2 four spindles are mounted in a turret. One grinding-operation takes place at a, a stock feed at a<SP>1</SP>, a second grinding operation at a<SP>2</SP>, and parting off at a<SP>3</SP>. The turret may carry eight spindles two being acted on simultaneously at each grinding station by a common wheel, stock being fed in two spindles simultaneously and the parting-tool being duplicated. A separate grinding-operation may be carried out on each spindle a, Fig. 4, the upper wheels c being carried by slides 1<SP>1</SP> superposed on the slides I for the lower wheels. A parting-tool, not shown, may sever the article on the completion of the four grinding operations, or one of the wheels may be used for severing after three operations. When only two grinding operations are required an additional parting- tool is provided and the articles are completed during each revolution of the turret. In a further modification four spindles carried by slides arranged as the wheel slides in Fig. 4 carry work acted on simultaneously by a single centrally arranged wheel. The wheels may be spaced apart on the same axis to produce the same or different diameters and forms. Additional tools may be incorporated to perform other operations before, during, or after the grinding operations.
