Abstract

528,765. Decorticating fibrous leaves. MACPHERSON, E. R. RIVERS-. (Bekok (Johore) Hemp Co., Ltd.). May 4, 1939, No. 13408. [Class 120 (i)] The leaf sheaths of manilla hemp are decorticated by drawing them vertically upwards in a straight path between stripping knives so that the waste material falls clear of the fibres. As shown the sheath to be treated has its upper end secured in a clamp J sliding on vertical guides A and attached to a cable D which passes over pulleys and is attached to a winch E controlled by a clutch or the like El ; the sheath is engaged by knives G<SP>1</SP> below the clamp J and when the knives are closed upon the sheath by a handle G2, the clutch is actuated by a lever F to cause the clamp to be drawn up the guides A and draw the sheath between the knives. The handle G<SP>2</SP> is preferably disposed adjacent the lever F and there may be an operative connection between them so that when the knife is closed the clutch is automatically operated to raise the clamp. The clamp is secured to a crosshead C by links and consists of a fixed jaw provided with guides in which a movable spring-controlled jaw slides, the jaws being pressed together by a cam or a hand-lever L<SP>1</SP> pivoted to one of the guides. The knife comprises a blade slidable horizontally in a frame H under spring control and a blade carried by the handle G<SP>2</SP> and pivoted to the frame; a catch may be provided to maintain the blades closed.
