Abstract

528,557. Recording-apparatus. WIRTH, A. May 9, 1939, No, 13873. Convention date, Mav 10, 1938. [Class 106 (iv)] [Also in Group XVIII] Recording-apparatus for a pendulum-weight weighing apparatus or other measuring apparatus comprises type wheels set through the agency of two sets of stepped elements and feelers, the sets coming into operation successively. As shown in connection with a weighing scale the pointer spindle 1, Fig. 1, carries two stepped discs 5, 6 for the lower denominations of the weight recordings, and is operated by a rack 7 secured to a part 9 which moves in proportion to the weight of the commodity. A rod 12 pivoted in unstable equilibrium on the part 9 carries two stepped rods 13, 14 for the higher denominations. Feelers 17, 18 co-operate with the stepped wheels 5, 6. Selectors 23, 24 pivoted upon bell-crank levers 21, 22, and actuated by rods 19, 20 co-operate with the stepped rods 13, 14. A further set of stepped elements and feelers comprises stepped levers 30-33 resiliently connected to the rods 17-20 and co-operating with feeler rods 127, Fig. 7, which actuate type wheels 138. To ensure correct engagement of the selectors 23, 24 with the stepped bars 13, 14 when near the change from one denomination to another, a bracket 25 on the feeler 17 rocks the selectors 23, 24 to ensure engagement with the correct step. The feelers 17, 18 are inclined to the plane of the stepped discs 5, 6, but are prevented from slipping laterally off the steps by friction and by spring- pressed plungers 45, Fig. 7. The pressure of the plungers is relaxed by cams 115 after the feeling movement so that if a disturbance of equilibrium then occurs the feelers slip off the steps and printing is prevented by a locking device described below. In taking a printed record on a sheet fed into a slot 173 the printing handle 95 is depressed and allowed to return under spring action. During the return a pawl rotates a cam shaft 91 through a right angle and further cams 115 resiliently rock the stepped levers 30-33 to bring the feelers 17, 18 and selectors 21, 22 against their stepped members. Other cams 115 rock levers 123 and cause resilient pull rods 125 to raise the feeler rods 127 into engagement with the steps 111 of the stepped levers, thereby setting the type wheels 138. A further cam 115 releases a lever 143, previously set by a finger 103, and allows a spring 146 to actuate the printing hammer 148 and effect a record. An inking ribbon 151 is guided under the type wheels. If a feeler rod 127 misses the teeth 111, a locking hook 142 retains the lever 143 and prevents a printing operation. When the feeler rod 127 engages the teeth, the rod bends sufficiently to withdraw the locking hook and permit printing. A similar locking action takes place if for any reason the type wheels cannot turn freely or if a selector 23, 24, Fig. 1, meets an overloading step 77. If a repetition of the print is required, a knob 156 is pushed in to hold up the lever 123 and retain the rods 127 and type wheels whilst the'repeat impression is obtained irrespective of any scale movements. When a device for increasing the weighing range of the scale by adding capacity weights is provided, the capacity-changing handle is interconnected with the rod 127 of highest denomination so as to vary the effective length of the rod and correspondingly vary the setting of its type' wheel. The ends of the feelers 17, 18 are shaped as shown in Fig. 14, so as to avoid engaging the bottoms of the teeth of the wheels 5, 6. The proximate surfaces of the feelers and the wheels are substantially parallel to each other to avoid damage to the points of the feelers if the wheel is moving. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also a paper feed wherein, upon actuation of the printing handle 95. a roller 172 moved by rods 175 and pawl mechanism 183 is depressed on to the paper in the slot 173 and is given a small rotation to move the paper from a viewing mark 174 to a position beneath the type wheels 138. During the return of the printing handle and after the printed record has been made, a rod 179, lever 180 and pawl 185 reverse the rotation of the roller 172 and move the sheet half-way back towards the viewing mark 174 for inspection. The rod 175 now raises the roller 172 to permit the sheet to be removed. The raising of the roller may be prevented by a hand lever if the sheet is to be retained for printing in columns. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
