Abstract

528,451. Measuring fluid pressure. COSSOR, Ltd., A. C., HUMPHREYS, T. D., and DODDS, E. M. April 24, 1939. No. 12259. [Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVI] An element suitable for measuring fluid pressures comprises a diaphragm arranged for one of its faces to be exposed to the pressure to be measured, while temperature-maintaining liquid is passed in contact with substantially the whole of the other face. The condenser element shown in Fig. 1 comprises a diaphragm la integral with a steel body 1 which has a screw thread 1b for insertion into an engine cylinder &c. A member 2 is formed with a web 2a and is riveted to the centre of the diaphragm 1a. Adjacent and parallel to the plane top face of the member 2 is the plane bottom face of a member 6 which is carried by a synthetic resin insulator 7 supported by a threaded steel sleeve 9. This sleeve is screwed into a second sleeve 3 which is screwed into the body 1 and grips the edge of the web 2a against a seating. The members 2, 6 form the moving and fixed plates of a condenser, the member 2 being constrained by the diaphragms 1a, 2a to move so that its upper face is always perpendicular to the direction of movement. Electrical connection to the member 6 is made with screened aero ignition cable secured in the sleeve 9 and making contact with the point 6a of the member 6. The diaphragms 1a, 2a form the top and bottom walls of a chamber through which cooling water, or other liquid such as oil, is passed by way of ducts 5 and pipes 4. In a modification, Fig. 2, the diaphragm 1a forms the moving plate of the condenser, there being two fixed plates 11, 12 formed as D-shaped heads on rods 11a, 12a. The cooling liquid serves also as the dielectric of the condenser. Water from the mains may be employed if the condenser is connected in a circuit supplied by alternating current of a frequency higher than the highest frequency of pressure variations to be measured. The pressure measurement is obtained by measuring the resulting modulation of the alternating current in frequency, phase or amplitude. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 ducts may be provided to enable the cooling liquid to pass between the plates 2, 6. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the moving plate 'may be formed by a member similar to the member 2, Fig. 1, without the integral diaphragm 2a.
