Abstract
528,226. Ships' logs. WALKER & SON, Ltd., T., and GWYNNE, G. W. May 1, 1939, No. 12988. [Class 97 (ii)] In a ships' log of the kind wherein a log rotator is towed by a log line, the formation of kinks or turns in the line when the rotator is hauled in is prevented by a shroud which, prior to hauling-in, is passed down the log line to encase the rotator and thus stop its rotation. As shown in Fig. 3, the shroud may comprise a truncated cone C having a slit E throughout its length to permit it to be placed round the log line A. The slit is closed by a clip H to which is tethered a weight or sinker J. On throwing the sinker overboard, the shroud is carried down the log line until, as shown in Fig. 4, it shrouds the rotator B and permits the line to be drawn in without kinking. In a modification, the shroud is not split, and when out of use, remains on the line and is tied to the governor wheel by thongs.
