Abstract

526,148. Picketing machines; capsules; collapsable tubes and containers. STEVENS, A. H. (Stokes & Smith Co.). March 9, 1939, No. 7647. [Classes 66 and 94 (i)] [Also in Group V] Containers or capsule: filled with liquid are made by applying heat and pressure to form flattened sealed sections along a tube of thermo-plastic web material impervious to liquid, intermittently feeding the web by pulling each section in turn, introducing the liquid into the tube in the interval between the formation of successive sections, and severing the sealed sections. Nested tubes or webs may be used to obtain multi-ply sealed sections. The web W is drawn from roller R over the forming tube 1 and sealed longitudinally at S by heat and pressure as described in Specification 440,328. The end of the tube so formed is sealed by heated clamping means 2, the slide 3 in the reservoir 4 is moved over the open end of the tube 1 so as to discharge the predetermined amount of liquid, the heated clamping means 2 are moved from the full-line position to the dotted-line position to form a seal closing the bottom of the next container, the clamping means is moved back to the full-line position thereby drawing down the web, and the filled capsule is severed by the cutter 6. The process is repeated to form successive filled capsules. A similar process is used to form multi-ply capsules from nested tubes (Fig. 4, not shown). The longitudinal seam S may take different forms (Figs. 2, 3, 5, not shown). Single-ply capsules may be formed from two webs (Figs. 6 to 8, not shown) and multi-ply capsules from four webs (Figs. 9 to 11, not shown). Completed packages in the form of closed bags of rectangular section may be similarly formed (Figs. 12, 13, not shown). The web may be paper, cloth, metal foil &c. impregnated or coated with thermo-plastic material.
