Abstract
525,705. Propenylbenzene derivatives. STAFFORD, ALLEN & SONS, Ltd., and WEST, T. F. Feb. 27, 1939, No. 6367. Sample furnished. [Class 2 (iii)] Allylbenzene derivatives are isomerized to the corresponding propenylbenzenes by heating with caustic alkali, using as a diluent a glycol, polyglycol, glycol ether or polyglycol ether. Preferably a hydroxyamine, such as an ethanolamine, is also present. In examples (1) eugenol is converted into isoeugenol by heating with caustic potash and diethyleneglycol, with and without addition of triethanolamine ; (2) safrole is converted to isosafrole by heating with caustic potash, ethyleneglycol monoethyl ether, and diethanolamine, and (3) eugenol methyl ether is converted into isoeugenol methyl ether by heating with caustic potash, diethyleneglycol monoethyl ether and monoethanolamine. A sample has been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of trans-isoeugenol ethyl ether, made from the ethyl ether of eugenol by isomerization with caustic potash in the presence of diethyleneglycol monoethyl ether and triethanolamine.
