Abstract

525,244. Electric insulation: REYROLLE & CO., Ltd., A., and RITCHIE, P. D. Feb. 21, 1939, No. 5755. Drawings to Specification. [Class 36] [Also in Group XXXVII] Electrical apparatus such as conductors and ewitchgear, enclosed in a casing and insulated by at least one gaseous or liquid carbon fluoride, has active carbon, for example, wood-charcoal, (impregnated if desired by mercuric or mercurous salts or other catalysts) for absorbing fluorine liberated from the carbon fluorides by arcing or other electric discharge, according to the relation nC + (n + 1) F 2# Cn F 2n + 2, the latter quantity possibly being a mixture of. homologues. Compounds of the series C nF 2n + 2 and Cn F 2n may be employed, as also dodecafluorocyclohexane C6, F12. Liquid and gaseous octafluoropropane in equilibrium is also referred to. The medium may be at otherthan-atmospheric pressure. Electrodes between which arcing occurs may be of carbon, but preferably are in the form of spring plungers surrounded by a carbon sheath or series of carbon rods, fed forward as they are consumed, the whole being assembled in a casing of copper or other metal which forms a protective film, when acted upon by fluorine.
