Abstract
525,036. Ship's furniture. SEARING, F. de W. Feb. 13, 1939, No. 4645. Convention date, Feb. 24, 1938. [Class 113 (i)] A self-levelling device for ship's furniture of the kind described in U.S.A. Specification 1,970,630 in which a self-levelling base for chairs, beds &c. consists of a base frame presenting a pair of upwardly directed concave coaxial tracks of equal radius supporting an intermediate wheeled frame also presenting a similar pair of tracks perpendicular to the first pair and adapted to support an upper weighted frame to which the chair &c. is attached is constructed with means to facilitate access to the chair &c. by reducing the length of one member of each pair of tracks, and with means to prevent tendency of the chair to oscillate under movement of the body. The tracks are preferably constructed with one member of plain cross section and the other member formed with a flange larger than or smaller than grooves in the wheels running on this track so that binding of the wheels on the track is obviated. As applied to a chair, Figs. 1 and 2, the upper weighted frame is formed of wooden members 12, 13, 14, 15, adapted to support a chair which can be folded for storage and which is formed of a back member 28, arm rests 37, and a sloping seat 33 to which is pivoted a footrest 30 supported by a detachable pivoted strut 39. The upper frame is connected to a weight 167 by means of four cords attached to lever arms on the frame. The frame is fitted with rollers 159, 160 which move on a curved track 114a supported by the intermediate frame, and with rollers 161, 162 spaced apart further than the rollers 159, 160 and adapted to move on a similar curved track 156 longer than the track 114a. The intermediate frame is fitted with rollers 163, 164 spaced nearer than rollers 165, 166, and these pairs of rollers move on tracks 72a, 72b, of which the track 72a is cut short to permit of access to the bed when the device is used to support a mattress. A clothing guard 51 is fitted to the chair and braces 109, 110, 111 are provided for strengthening the chair, and struts are used to hold the tracks 72a, 72b firmly in operative position. Fig. 7 shows the invention applied to a bed in which a spring mattress 52 is mounted on a support 57 carried by a weighted upper platform 58. The mattress is positioned by bolts 61 engaging apertures 107 in the support 57, which is mounted on tracks 114, 156 by rollers spaced apart at different distances as in the first modification. The tracks 114, 156 are of different lengths and are supported by an intermediate frame mounted on rollers 62, 63 : 65, 66 running on tracks 72, 71 (not shown). Bed clothing guards 158 are provided. The bed fitting can be folded up when not in use, and struts are used to maintain the parts secure when the whole is assembled.
