Abstract
524,990. Valves. FIRESTONE TYRE & RUBBER CO., Ltd. (Firestone Tire & Rubber Co.). Jan. 12, 1939, No. 1054. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXXIV] An air-tube comprises a main tube 12, Fig. 3, and a reserve tube 11 with a communicating valve which permits simultaneous inflation or deflation of both tubes at uniform rates, and is responsive to a sudden release of pressure in the main tube so as to impede deflation of the reserve tube. As shown, the tube 12 is inflated directly through a passage 19 in the valve-stem 15 and is fed to the reserve tube 11 through a port 20 and past a ball-valve 23 which is raised from its seat to abut a series of tangs 25 on the inner end of the stem. A plug 27 is removably fitted in the stem to permit the insertion of a tool for unseating the valve 23. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the inflating-valve 15 leads directly into the reserve tube 11 which is fitted with a ball-valve 30 normally seated, by means of a spring '34, against a slotted seat 37. Normally, free communication between the tubes is thus provided but on deflation of the outer tube, the ball 30 is forced against its closing-seat 32, co isolate the reserve tube. Fig. 6 shows a further modification in which communication between the tubes is provided through an aperture 40 in the reserve tube 11. Arranged behind, and normally spaced from, the aperture 40 is a flexible strip 43 formed with a teat 44 which operates to close the aperture on sudden fall of pressure in the tube 12.
