Abstract
522,552. Cellulose derivative and synthetic resin compositions and articles made therefrom. MERGIER, P. L., and LEROY, P. E. Dec. 15, 1938, No. 36600. Convention date, Nov. 22, 1938. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 21, 1939] [Classes 2 (ii) and 2 (iii)] A composition, suitable for moulding articles such as statues, fancy goods, household furniture, canoes, lighting apparatus, advertising objects, luminous sign boards, architectural elements, or hollow-ware, or for lining walls or other objects, consists of two contacting phases, the first comprising a concentrated solution in a volatile solvent of a colloidal material such as a cellulose ester or a synthetic resin, and the second consisting of grains of the same colloidal material, the phases being present in such proportions that the first phase readily gels without syneresis occurring. When the two phases are brought together the grains absorb part of the volatile solvent and become peptized on the surface and the solution turns to a thick jelly. The total weight of cellulose derivative or synthetic resin is at least equal to the weight of volatile solvent employed. Plaster or other moulds may be used and to avoid adhesion they may be coated internally with a thin layer of gelatine. In an example, dry grains of cellulose acetate are added to a viscous solution of cellulose acetate in acetone. The mixture is poured into a plaster mould. The mass rapidly sets to a gel and the volatile solvent is allowed to evaporate. Colouring or filling materials may be incorporated in the compositions. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the production and use of compositions in which the added grains are of colloidal material other than that employed as solute, in the solution phase. Degraded cellulose ethers may be used. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
