[Class 69 (i)] In a tank, reservoir or like container formed of sheet material such as steel plate, particularly a tank for subterranean storage of liquids, the side walls are without associated stiffening members and are made of sheet metal plating with substantially vertical folds therein to provide rigidity, the upper and lower edges being directly welded or similarly connected to plating forming the roof and floor; substantially horizontal buckles or indentations may also be provided to give increased strength. In Figs. 1 and 1a, the walls are formed of two bay plates, i.e. plates each with a quarter cylinder convexity and a quarter cylindrical concavity, the edges of adjoining plates being connected by lap or butt welding. At opposite corners of the tank, the plates are connected to form a semi-cylindrical column C; at the remaining corners, half round or rectangular channels are secured to the plates to form similar columns. Three bay plates may be used. In Fig. 2a, the plates are of angular section, preferably right angles, and in Fig. 3a, trough section plates are used. The plates are preferably uninterrupted for the full height of the tank ; interior columns may be provided to support the roof. The plating of the walls should have a modulus in cubic inches per foot length of at least and the pitch L of the folds in the plates in inches should be H/C #.4p + À2wH, where p =air pressure in tank in pounds per square inch, w =weight in pounds per cubic foot of the liquid for which the tank is intended, H =height of the tank in feet, f = allowable working stress in tons per square inch, C = #356.5# k/.4142 + k, k = t/L and t = thickness of the plate in inches.
