Abstract
522,394. Delivering articles from hoppers. BURDIN, N. V., and GRAHAM-ENOCK MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. Dec. 7, 1938, No. 35727. [Class 78 (i)] Delivering flanged articles such as bottle-caps to machines. The hopper 1, into which the articles are tipped promiscuously, is rotated step-by-step through quarter-revolutions by pins 20 on a driving wheel engaging recesses 15 in a disc fixed to the end of the hopper. Pins 16 engage the periphery 21 of the driving wheel to prevent rotation of the hopper between successive drives. During rotation of the hopper the discs fall edgeways into pockets 2 with sloping bottoms and are delivered by gravity to a fixed shoot 4 as each pocket becomes inverted thereover in turn. A cam 5 opens each pocket slightly at the point of delivery as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5 to prevent sticking. The shoot 4 feeds the discs to the one-walled shoot 7. Those with their flanges outermost pass straight on to the conduit 22, but those with flanges innermost tip over as shown in Fig. 5 and are thus turned round with flanges outermost, after which they proceed by way of shoot 12 to join the other discs in the conduit 22. An overflow passage 23 leads surplus discs back to the hopper. Fig. 9 shows a modification in which the caps are caught in the slits formed between pivoted members 27, 29 forming part of the walls of the hopper. At the discharge point the member 27 is lifted right up as seen at the top of the Figure, and the member 29 swung beyond the vertical to tip the row of discs on to the shoot 35.
