Abstract

522,366. Cracking and hydrogenating oils. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. Dec. 6, 1938, No. 35561. Convention date, Dec. 17, 1937. [Class 32] [Also in Group IV] Cyclic hydrocarbons are prepared by contacting aliphatic hydrocarbons, both paraffinic and olefinic, having from 6 to 12 carbon atoms, or mixtures containing them at temperatures of about 400-600‹C. with heavy metal salts of molybdic or tungstic acid such as the iron, nickel, cobalt, copper, chromium, and manganese salts. The conversion is preferably effected under a hydrogen pressure exceeding 10, e.g. about 50 atmos. The catalysts may be employed with other catalysts or promoters or on carriers. Aliphatic hydrocarbons of non- branched or only slightly branched structure are particularly suitable starting materials. Gasolines, including hydrogenation, cracking or polymer gasolines or those obtained from carbon monoxide and hydrogen may also be used. The cyclic products have increased octane numbers and are used as gasolines or blending agents therefor. In an example, an octene fraction, obtained by vapour phase cracking of paraffin wax, is passed at 540‹C. and under a hydrogen pressure of 50 atmos over nickel tungstate with a contact time of 40 secs. The liquid product contains 29 per cent. aromatics and 31 per cent. naphthenes by weight. Specifications 400,628 and 483,189 are referred to.
