Abstract

522,325. Ball-and-float valves. CRANE, Ltd. (Crane Co.). Jan. 4, 1939, No. 290. [Class 135] In an inlet supply valve for automatic flushing tanks in which the valve member 10 is normally adjusted with respect to an orifice member 5 to allow a restricted flow of liquid to the tank and is operable through lever means 14 on a change in liquid level in the tank to increase the passage for liquid so as to flush out any sediment or deposit, the valve member or the orifice member or both are constructed of fired ceramic material, glass, or other hard material. A steatite ceramic material having a hardness of about 9 on Mohs scale is specially suitable. As shown in Fig. 2, the valve casing 3 is coupled to a supply elbow 2 by a union 4 and has a bracket 6 to secure it to the tank 9 which contains an automatic discharge valve. The orifice member 5 and a strainer 20 are clamped by the union 4. The valve member is screwed to a stem 18 of square or other section slidable with line contact in the outlet bore 19. The valve operating lever 14 is pivoted at 13 and secured to a float arm 16 by a set screw 15. The valve closing movement of the lever 14 is limited by an externally adjustable screw 21 engaging the toe 14c of the lever. The depending flush tube 11 has slots 11a to accommodate the lever 14. In a modification, the lower end of the stem 18 is bifurcated and straddles the lever 14. In another form, the stem 18 is of circular section and has a close fit in the bore 19, the outlet and the flush tube being in this case offset from the axis of the valve member.
