Abstract

522,003. Controlling variable-speed gears. NOUGAROU, J. Nov. 2, 1938, No. 31746. Convention date, Nov. 3, 1937. [Class 80 (ii)] A device for the automatic control of changespeed gears for motor vehicles has the change initiated by the closing of an electrical contact effected in consequence of the reciprocal parallel movement of two members, the movement of one of these members is dependent on the speed of the vehicle and the other member has a lostmotion connection with the accelerator. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 a contact 65 moved by means responsive to the speed of the vehicle co-operates with two spring contacts 2, 3 carried by a member 69 mounted on a plunger 9 slidably mounted in a cylinder 90. Collars 13, 14 adjustably mounted on the inner cable 17 of a Bowden wire 16 provide a lost-motion connection between the member 69 and the accelerator pedal. Adjustable stops 11, 12 on a member 10 cooperate with a lug 91 to limit the movement of the member 69. When the accelerator is in the slow running position a stop 18 on the cable 17 retreats and allows spring contact 20 to engage contact 19 and so short-circuiting contacts and preventing automatic gear change. While the contact 65 is in contact with both the contacts 2, 3 both the coils 4, 5 of a relay are energized and the movable contact 21 remains in engagement with that one of the contacts 6, 7 with which it was in engagement when a single coil was last energized. In the event of the contact moving in the direction necessary to break the circuit including this coil the switch swings over and a gear change is initiated. In a modification for controlling a four-speed gear the circuit includes six contacts, adapted to co-operate with the contact 65, two relays similar to the relay 4, 5, 6, 7 and four single contact relays one of which has a double winding and another of which is slowacting the armature carrying a plate positioned in a viscous liquid in proximity to a fixed plate.
