Abstract
521,895. Fermentation; fertilizers. COOMBS, J. A. Nov. 24, 1938, No. 34140. [Class iii)] [Also in Group XIII] In the fermentation of granular material, or the production of fertilizer from refuse, air is cooled to'reduce moisture content, then heated, and finally diffused into the material through porous stone plates. The material is built into ridges or pyramids and impelled, along the floor with intervals of rest by rotary blades 53 on arms 52 as described in Specifications 496,547 and 496,637. For fermentation, the material may be sprayed with inoculator or activator liquid such as sewage sludge. The plant comprises a hollow concrete floor 10 tiled with porous stone diffuser plates 15 in cast iron trays 16 with air inlets 17. Air is supplied from a compressor 20 to a cooler 22 where it is sprayed by water falling through openings in the base of a tank 38 on to stepped cones carried by arms, and passes through a reducing valve 23 to conduits 24, 25. Branches 26 with valves 28 conduct the air from conduit 25 to conduit 27 in the floor and thence to the air inlet conduits 17. The air may be heated to about 100 ‹F. by electric heaters 30 in the pipes 26. Water is led from the conduits 25 by an end pipe to a water collector 29 to which water from the air cooler also flows through porous stone plates at the bottom of the cooler by a pipe 44. The cooler, the conduits 25, 26, and the .compressor are placed in a longitudinal passage. The roof has rotating cowls which may have suction fans and may be closed, and the air in the plant may be held under pressure to assist fermentation. The rotatable blades 53 are carried on arms 52 adjusted by winches 50 driven by an electric motor 51 on a carriage 48 running on rails 49 above the chamber. The air may be diffused by pipes into a cinder bed on the concrete floor. The air heaters may be in the diffuser trays. The plant may have no roof and be used at one time for fermentation and at another time for drying hops or hay. Specification 6065/97, [Class 34] and 521,894 also are referred to.
