Abstract

521,384. Tobacco pipes. FUHBMANN, W., and POWERS, T. F. April 4, 1939, No. 10475. Convention date, Aug. 10, 1938. [Class 130] A cover for the bowl of a tobacco pipe is pivoted to a member slidably mounted on the exterior wall of the bowl. As shown in Fig. 1, a pipe having a bowl 8 and a stem 10 of square or rectangular cross-section is provided with a bowl cover formed by a plate 13 which is hinged by a pin 23 to a plate 18 provided with a fingerpiece 28 and mounted on the wall of the bowl. The plate 18 has flanges 19 which slide in recesses 20 in the side walls of the bowl. One of the recesses is wider than the other and provided with pins 29 which engage with a projection 30 on the corresponding flange 19 to limit the movements of the plate 18. A spring urges the plate 13 towards the top of the bowl. In the position shown in dot and dash lines the plate 13 acts as a windshield to facilitate lighting of the tobacco. The plate 13 has a perforated raised portion 14 spaced from the wall of the bowl. In modified constructions (a) the cover has an extension which is folded over and spaced from the top of the plate 13 and (b) the plate 13 is spaced from the top of the bowl by flanged portions on its under surface.
