[Class 46] [Also in Group XXVIII] The material of which star-shaped or other pleated or corrugated filter elements is made is provided with abutment means running transversely of the bends or folds and arranged so, as to ensure the maintenance of open spaces between them where the filtering material might otherwise contact with that of the neighbouring bend. As shown the material comprises sheets 1, 2 of cloth and gauze with abutments formed by lead wires 9, arranged as shown in Fig. 3, between them and held in position by stitching. Alternatively layers of cloth folded over the edges of the gauze, as shown, and then folded back upon themselves may serve as spacing means. Or the gauze may be formed with ridges or other deformations to serve as spacing means. In use the element may be sprung into a perforated container 8 which holds it in compressed position, as described in Specification 520,881.
