Abstract

[Class 92 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] A handle for effecting gun-laying operations is provided with means for changing over from one laying speed to another without interruption of the gun-laying operation. The pinion 10, Fig. 1, gearing with the ring 3, for training the gun, is mounted on the hub of a toothed wheel 7 which is mounted on the spindle 8<SP>1</SP> of a handwheel 8, the toothed wheel having riveted thereto a toothed ring 9. A bearing flange 1 fixedly carried either by the upper or lower gun carriage carries a locking plate 4 having a number of recesses 5. The handwheel 8 is provided with a rotatable handle 12 axial movement of which is prevented by a pin 13. A lever 19 pivoted on the handle at 20 is urged by a spring 21 away from the handle and is fitted with a toothed member gearing with a pinion 23 which, in turn, meshes with teeth on a bolt 18. In the position shown, the bolt engages in one of the recesses 5 and maintains the training gear locked. On the lever 19 being gripped so that the projection 19' thereon engages a step 25<SP>1</SP> on a spring-pressed pawl 25, the bolt 18 is withdrawn, thereby unlocking the handwheel which, when turned, drives the pinion 10 through the differential gearing constituted by a toothed wheel 1<SP>1</SP> carried by a sleeve 17 splined in a sleeve 16 having teeth engaging the toothed ring 9. If the pawl 25 is pressed and further movement imparted to the lever 19, the bolt 18 slides the sleeve 17 so that the toothed wheel 1<SP>1</SP> thereon meshes with the wheel 7 thereby enabling the handwheel to drive the pinion 10 directly. In a modification, the handwheel 8, Fig. 2, housing the change-gear mechanism has a sliding bar 27 for actuating the gear change, this bar being governed by a three-armed lever 28 which is controlled by a slidable hand-grip 19, the lever 28 being main-- tained in either of two positions by an overcentre spring 26b.
