[Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A hydraulic coupling is constructed with a number of gear pumps 14 mounted in an annular space 8 between casings 6, 7 the inner members of the pump gears being fitted with planet gears 16, Fig. 2, gearing with a sun-wheel 17 on the driven or driving-shaft 18 mounted in bearings in the casing 7 and in a casing 19 which contains the gears 16, 17 and is secured to the casings 6, 7 by bolts 39 which may also connect the whole coupling to a flange 40 on the driving or driven shaft 41. The pump chambers 9 are integral with the outer wall 11 of the annular member 8. Each pump 14 forces fluid into a separate chamber 130 from which the fluid passes through the parts 20a of a piston valve, or by means of another form of valve, through a passage 21 in the casing 7 to a chamber 13a. A pipe 31 connects the chamber 13a with the pump chamber 9, and a non-return valve controls the passage of fluid into the pipe 31 and so prevents reverse drive. The valves 20 are moved equally and simultaneously by rockers 26 operated by a slid:ng sleeve 25, and when fully open no power is transmitted. When the valve is closed or partly closed the resistance to rotation of the gears 16 causes power to be transmitted to the sun-wheel; The chamber 13b of one pump may be connected to the return pipes 31 of an adjacent pump, and other types of pump than the gear pumps shown may be employed. The bearings of the pump gears 14 in the casing 7 may be drained by pipes 38 leading to the inlet pipes 31.
