Abstract
518,786. Supply meters. BRITISH SANGAMO CO., Ltd., (Sangamo Electric Co.). Sept. 3, 1938, No. 25828. [Class 37] A maximum demand meter in which the maximum indicator is advanced by the driven element of a clutch which is periodically disengaged and returned to zero position has the driving and driven clutch elements mounted in proper relationship upon a stationary arbor fixed to the frame. A worm 2 on the meter shaft 1 drives a worm-wheel 3 on a shaft 4 having worms 7, 8 cut on it. The worm 7 drives the usual counting train, while the worm 8 drives the maximum demand mechanism through gearing 9, 11, 12. The pinion 12 is a part of a friction driving clutch, its face normally contacting with a face of a member 15, Fig. 3, against which it is held by a spring 28. This clutch is opened and closed by a lever 36 operated by the timing mechanism. The member 15 has formed on it a pinion 33, to which is secured a disc 34. This drives a disc 47 through pins 35, 50, 48 and one or more loose discs 49 so that one or more revolutions of the driven disc 47 may be effected while permitting the driving disc 34 to be returned to its initial position without affecting the position of the driven disc 47, which is left at its position of greatest displacement. A loose gear-wheel 44 is driven from the disc 47 through a spring washer 45 and drives registering pointers 23, 24, 25 for the maximum demand through gearing 51, 54, 57, 58, 60. A ratchet-wheel 53 prevents reverse rotation. The members 12, 15, 49, 47, 44 are mounted on sleeves 85, 43 which rotate on fixed arbors 29, 30 from which they can be removed by longitudinal movement. The upper end of the arbor 29 rests in the lower end of the arbor 30. The driving disc 34 is returned to its initial position when the clutch 12, 15 is opened at the end of each time interval by means of a sector 37 meshing with the pinion 33 and operated by a weight or spring. At the end of a monthly period the driven disc 47 is reset to zero by means of a lever 68, Fig. 7, mounted on a shaft 69 to which is also fastened a sector 70 engaging a. pinion 46 fixed to the disc 47. The position of the lever 68 indicates the maximum demand during the monthly period and may be extended to form a pointer moving over an arcuate scale. Resetting is effected by turning back a lever 68 to a stop 71, corresponding to the zero position of the disc 47. The pointers 23, 24, 25 are held stationary during this operation by the ratchet 55, relative movement between the disc 47 and gear-wheel 44 being permitted by the slipping of the spring washer 45. During the following monthly period the pointers 23, 24, 25 are advanced to show the maximum demand added to the previous maximum demand. In a modification the pointers 23, 24, 25 are held stationary by a ratchet during the recording period and are advanced by the amount of the maximum demand during that period by the resetting means. Specification 475,512 is referred to.
