Abstract
518,508. Pumping water; gravity-separation apparatus; filters. WIEMER, E. Aug. 27, 1938, No. 25233. Convention date, Aug. 28, 1937. [Class 46] To separate the constituents of coalwashing or other sludge, the sludge liquid is passed under pressure into a closed space over a screen and an intermittent upward movement is given to the liquid by means of a piston, so that heavier constituents can settle and are discharged while the liquid and unseparated solid matter is passed into a sludge-settling and concentrating device from which the liquid is discharged through a filter under pulsatory pressure. In the arrangement shown coal washing water is fed from a receptacle 6 down a pipe 5 to a space above a screen 4 beneath which a piston 2 moves in a cylinder 1. The heavier solid matter settling on the screen is discharged through conduits 9, 10. Part of the pipe 5 is formed as a filter 7 through which water passes to the conduit 8 during the downstroke of the piston. During the upstroke some water returns through the conduit 8 and cleans the filter 7, but most of the water passes through the screen 4 and washes lighter solid matter over an overflow 12 into a channel 13. The screen may be in sections of different permeability and the water forced upward by the piston is distributed by baffles 16 with adjustable apertures. An outlet 14 from the channel 13 is closed by the piston 2 when in its lowest position, but when the piston moves up the mud falls into a chamber 20 fitted with grids 29, 30. During the downward movement of the piston the mud is pressed against a filter 19, through which clean water passes to an outlet 18. The mud collects at the bottom of the container 20 and is pressed by a worm 23 through an opening controlled by weighted pivoted flaps 26.
