Abstract
518,418. Aircraft landing-gear. VEREINIGTE DEUTSCHE METALLWERKE AKT. - GES., FAUDI, F., and TOENNIS, E. Aug. 24, 1938, No. 24926. [Class 4] The energy stored in the springing medium of aircraft landing-gear when stressed by the weight of the aircraft is utilized in stressing another springing system when the aircraft is lifted from the ground and the energy thus accumulated is employed for actuating aircraft parts, such as undercarriage retraction gear or flap operating gear. In one form a shock-absorbing strut comprises a cylinder b in which slides' a hollow piston rod a having an annular piston c. The space above the piston c contains compressed air serving as the springing medium while the air in the annular. space f below the piston absorbs recoil shocks. A packing ring d moves with the piston rod a, its movement being restricted by stops: A plunger z is adapted to enter the piston c causing air or other medium to be metered through slits or openings in the piston. When the strut is relieved of load the compressed air in space f . is available for operating a double-acting servo-motor consisting of a cylinder g with piston h. More than one servo-motor may be provided and pressure may be exerted on the piston through a liquid medium. The energy accumulator f may be separate from the shock strut. The springing medium may be constituted by steel springs or rubber springs and may be stressed through a mechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic transmission.
