Abstract

518,065. Controlling aircraft. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and PETTER W. E. W. April 22, 1938, No. 12138. [Class 4] An auxiliary wing flap normally nested beneath the trailing portion of a wing and.adapted to be moved downwardly and rearwardly moves around hinge members outside and under the wing, the hinge members and the connections to the flap being located mainly or wholly within the contour of other existing parts of the machine such as the engine nacelles. As shown, a normally - nested wing - flap a is continuous across the centre-section of a low-winged monoplane. The flap is guided by a roller g carried by the fuselage and engaging a track f on the flap. At the ends of the flap rollers h are guided in arcuate tracks i fixed to the wing. The rear portions b of two engine nacelles are attached to the flap and pivoted about an axis x. The flaps are operated by hydraulic rams e. The flap may carry auxiliary flaps and may be interconnected with a slot-forming slat. In modifications, flaps on each wing are hinged in the engine nacelles and guided at the tips of the flaps, spaced hinges may be disposed in spaced nacelles, retractable float fairings, petrol tank fairings, or struts. Specification 299,274, [Class 4], is referred to.
