518,012. Furnace covers. MORTON, W. A., and SPENCER, H. F. May 3, 1938, No. 18548/39. Divided out of 514,337. [Class 51 (ii)] The octangular traversing cover of a pittype furnace is sealed by flanges depending into granular refractory material and the side and end flanges are so dimensioned that only the seals extending at right angles to the direction of the movement of the cover are broken when the cover is lifted for traversing. The end flanges, Fig. 6, consist of V-edged refractory slabs 70 held by shoes 75 bolted to the cover, while the side flanges, Fig. 5, are lengthened by metal extension pieces 74. The cover is suspended from the axles of the traversing- carriage, and the lowering movement is retarded by dashpot devices.
