Abstract

517,871. Rolling tubes and rods ; making cased forms. GERBRACHT, E. Aug. 8, 1938, No. 23397. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Malleable steel is formed direct from molten metal by allowing the metal to fall into a funnel formed by the spherical surfaces of 3 or more rotating rolls which form a pass. In falling, the metal falls or is sprayed, Fig. 7, on the cooled surface so that it breaks up into small drops which weld together in the funnel and are rolled out into, e.g., square or rectangular section or by grooving the rolls, e.g., as in Figs. 14, 15 the, section may be circular, hexagonal &c. Fig. 9 shows an individual roll cooled by fluid blocked at i in the hollow shaft so that it has to flow through conduits k to the interior and out again, the exit being smaller than the inlet to make sure that the roll is filled. Fig. 10 shows spherical surface rolls with cylindrical extensions o forming a pass. The molten metal may form a continuous tube by means of a core, e.g., in Fig. 17 or in shorter tube lengths by a core supported from below, or may encase a copper, aluminium, steel &c. core rod, Fig. 19, or may encase a tubular rod, Fig. 20. During pouring, fine iron chips, or a refining addition, or liquid or solid slag may be added to the molten metal.
