[Class 16] In an autographic register or the like in which one or more continuous strips of record material are fed step by step past a writing position by feeding means engaging the record materials and in which the strips are ejected from the machine step by step as they are fed, the feeding means is actuated by spring-urged mechanism in combination with means for loading the spring to cause it to actuate the feeding means operable by a simple manual movement such as the pulling of a lever or the depression of a push-button. In the portable register shown, the feeding means comprises two relatively spaced interconnected pin wheels 9 secured to a shaft 16 journalled in walls 10 spaced from the sides of the register. Mounted on one wall 10 is a gear-wheel 12 meshing with an idler pinion 13 which in turn meshes wth a driven gear-wheel 14 upon the pin wheel shaft 16. A disc 18 mounted concentrically with 'the gear 12 has mounted thereon a spring- controlled pawl 19 having engagement with ratchet teeth 17 formed on the hub of the gear 12, and a hand lever 22 is attached to the disc 18 for oscillation thereof. A tension spring 20 is connected at one end to the disc 18 and at the other end to a stud on the related wall 10. The pin wheels 9 are arrested at the end of each revolution which corresponds to the feeding of a full form length of record material by engagement of a detent lever 23 with a stop shoulder' 24 of a disc 25 secured to the pin wheel shaft 16, and a stud 26 on the. disc 18 is adapted to engage the. arm of the detent 23 to oscillate the latter away from the shoulder 24 prior to rotation of the shaft 16. In operation, the lever 22 is moved to 'the right to oscillate the disc 18 against the tension of the spring 20, the pawl 19 moving with the disc to engage the next ratchet tooth 17, and the stud 26 moving the detent 23 from the shoulder 24. The lever 22 is then released, the spring 20 propels the disc 18 and lever to the left, the pawl 19 partially rotates the gear 12 which in turn rotates the gear 14 on the shaft 16 on which the pin wheels 9 are secured. , The pin wheels are given one complete revolution and then arrested by the detent 23. In a modification, the lever 22 is coupled to the disc 18 through a pawl mounted on the lever engaging a notch in the disc, the pawl being tripped to release the disc when the lever has been moved to load the spring'20. This modification may be further modified by making the lever 22 shorter to lie within the register casing, and providing a push-button rod on the end of the lever which is simply depressed to load the spring 20. In a further 'modification, the disc 18 has a gear-wheel affixed therto, with which meshes a reciprooatory rack bar having a stem extending above the register casing and carrying a push-button.
