Abstract

515,928. Destructive hydrogenation. POTTS, H. E. (Naamlooze Vennootschap Internationale Hydrogeneeringsoctrooien Maatschappij). July 11, 1938, No. 20447. Addition'to 459,268. [Class 32] In the process for the production of valuable hydrocarbons by the destructive hydrogenation of carbonaceous materials described in the parent Specification, in which the initial materials are pretreated with sulphur compounds, in particular ammonium sulphide, the initial materials are pretreated with water containing ammonium sulphide which has been formed in the destructive hydrogenation reaction and has been separated from the gases and vapours escaping from the reaction vessel or separator employed therein. The water may be further enriched in ammonium sulphide by injecting it into the pipes of the apparatus in which ammonium sulphide crystals separate off, or by introducing hydrogen sulphide into the water. Brown coal is mixed in finely ground condition in a mixer 2 with 1.5 per cent. ammonium sulphide in the form of water obtained in the destructive hydrogenation of another portion of the same brown coal and fed through line 23. The mixture is dried in a drier 3 and pasted in a mill 4 with an equal weight of heavy oil fed through line 5 and 0.4 per cent. sludge withdrawn from separator 10 and .fed through line 6. The paste together with 3 per cent. Lux mass and hydrogen supplied through line 9 is passed through a preheater 7 to the reaction vessel 8 where it is destructively hydrogenated at 460‹C. and 250 atmos. pressure. The products obtained pass to a separator 10 from which oil-vapours pass to a condenser 11 and separator 12. The condensate is'separated from water in a vessel 15 and the water thus obtained which contains 12 per cent. ammonium sulphide is enriched with further ammonium sulphide to a strength of 18 per cent. and used for pasting coal in the mixer 2. The oil from the separator 15 is distilled in column 19 to give benzine and middle oil which latter is fed through line 21 to the centrifuge 18 in which sludge is separated from the products withdrawn from 'the separator 10.
