Abstract
515,539. Hook fastenings; slidable bracket hinges. AUSTIN MOTOR CO.. Ltd., and LORD. L. P. June 3, 1938, No. 16617. [Classes 44 and 65 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] In a motor vehicle bonnet of the kind having a single top flap adapted to be raised about a rear transverse hinge, the hinging means is raised bodily prior to lifting of the flap in order to provide clearance between the rear edge of the flap and the scuttle dash or equivalent body part which carries the hinges. Preferably, the means for raising the hinges also releases the catch normally securing the front of the flap. The rear corners of the top flap G are pivoted on the upper bent ends e<2> of rods E slidably mounted in brackets F secured to the scuttle partition B. The lower bent ends e of the rods, drawn down by springs e<3>, rest on the cranked ends a' of a transverse shaft A mounted in bearing brackets b, also secured to the partition B. The cranked ends a<1> normally lie in a horizontal plane, and, in a plane inclined thereto, the middle part of the shaft A is cranked at a, a connecting rod c leading therefrom to a disc c rotatably mounted on a stud c<2> adjustably secured in a partition board D and provided with a handle c<3>, the shaft A thus being given a part rotation to raise the hinges. A hook K, normally engaging an inverted U-bolt p to secure the front end of the flap, may also be released by connection thereof by a link M to a lever H pivoted in a bracket J. on the partition B, the crank a, or, if desired, another cranked part of the shaft A, passing through a slot h in the lower end of the lever. The lower end of the slot h may be concentric with the shaft A so that the catch is not released until the hinges have been partly raised. The hinges may be operated so as to raise the rear end of the bonnet, keeping the front end fastened, when driving under snowy, frosty or like weather conditions. The Provisional Specification describes an arrangement wherein the operating disc C is carried by a vertical partition.
