Abstract

515,310. Surgical optical instruments. SAMUELS, J. May 26, 1938, No. 15798. Convention date, May 29, 1937. [Class 81 (ii)] [Also in Group XX] Apparatus for determining the hormone condition in the human body by observing the time taken for the disappearance of the oxyhaemoglobin bands in the spectrum when the flow of blood in a clamped fold of skin ceases comprises a spectroscope A provided at its lower end with a nipple A<3> which is held by one part B<3> of a clamping 'tongs B ; the other part B<4> of which carrying an opposing nipple A<3> is fixed to an adjustable stand F, having a lens E in line with a lamp 0 along the axis of the spectroscope. A fold of skin is clamped between the nipples A<3> and held by a pawl and ratchet lock B<5>, B<2> on the tongs and the above observation is made, the time being noted from a dial D<3> on a screening plate D fitted to the stand which shows duration up to 300 seconds. The plate carries right and left rests D<2> for the tongs when the observer's own blood is tested so as to facilitate focusing. Arms D<4> are provided to carry a camera or kinematograph recorder. The spectroscope shown in Fig. 6 may be used for observation with a scale U on the spectrum.
