Abstract

515,039. Motor fuel hydrocarbons. ANGLOIRANIAN OIL CO., Ltd., DUNSTAN, A. E., and THOMPSON, F. E. A. Feb. 22, 1938, No. 5607. [Class 2 (iii)] Hydrocarbons suitable for use as a motor fuel or a motor fuel constituent are prepared by a two-stage process wherein the first stage comprises the catalytic alkylation of isobutane or isopentane with an olefine, and the second stage comprises the fractional distillation of the product thus obtained characterized in that the high boiling residue from the second stage is added to the reaction mixture in the first stage of a subsequent batch. The process may also be conducted such that the only olefine which is used in the first stage is that obtained as a high boiling residue from the second stage of a previous batch. The preferred alkylation process used in the first stage comprises treatment in the presence of sulphuric acid of high concentration within the range -10‹ C. to + 30‹ C. Olefines mentioned as suitable for the first stage include propylenes, isobutene, disobutene, triisobutene, butene-1, butene-2, trimethylethylene, or a mixture of olefines such as C4 fraction cut from gases derived from an oil cracking plant, or a condensation product from olefines derived from such a fraction, or a polymerized mixture of olefines, or a polymerized olefine such as propylene' butenes or isobutenes, or a polymer gasoline. In the second stage the distillation is carried on so as' to separate the constituents which have a boiling range of 20‹-185‹ C. Ethylene may be used as the olefine with isopentane in the presence of cupric sulphates and mercurous sulphates. Specification 479,345 is'referred to.
