Abstract

514,923. Locking devices for screw-threaded members; making locking washers. CHAPPUIS, J. A. May 19, 1938, No. 14992. Convention date, April 11. [Class 89 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] A locking device for screw-threaded members (bolt 1 and nut 2 on workpiece 3) comprises a pair of washers 4, 5 one of which has on one face one or more surfaces of substantially helical or inclined formation of greater inclination or pitch than, and of the same hand as, the inclination or pitch of the thread in or on the screwthreaded member, said surface or surfaces cooperating with one or more projections or helical or inclined surfaces on the second washer in such a manner that rotation of the first washer in the direction of unscrewing moves it in an axial direction a greater distance than the axial movement of the screw-threaded member produced by the same amount of rotational movement. The outer face of either or both washers may be smooth, roughened, or serrated as at 6, and the periphery of either or both washers may be of hexagonal or other non-circular form, or of circular form with flats or notches to facilitate unlocking. The washers may be made of metal which may be oxidised or nickel plated, synthetic resin, or other moulded material; they may be identically alike, and they may be coupled together by a thin central eyelet. Instead of being flat the two washers may be slightly conical so that they may be elastically deformed and flattened by the nut. Three hexagonal washers 27, Fig. 5, may be stamped simultaneously from a parallel-sided strip 24 by means of lateral punches 25 which stamp out notches from the sides of the strip, and punches 26 for the holes in the washers. The inclined surfaces and the serrations may be stamped simultaneously by placing the washer over a guide bolt 30, Fig. 7, at the centre of a toothed die 29 within a cavity 28 and then lowering the threepart punch shown in Fig. 6. The latter comprises an external portion 31 guiding a tube 32 which is formed on a part or the whole of its extremity with toothing 38, the tube 32 being pressed upon by a tube 33 and caused to make a small rotation by means of inclined planes 34, 35, such rotation being limited by a lug 37.
