Abstract

514,695. Road traffic signals on vehicles. RICHARDSON, S. May 12, 1938, No. 14176. [Class 118 (ii)] A direction-indicating device comprises the combination of one or more rotatable lighttransmitting signs such as arrows 9, Fig. 1, an electric lamp or lamps 15 for shining light through the arrows, and an obscuring device 3, Fig. 5, arranged in front of each sign and provided with opaque areas B and transparent areas A, the areas A being so disposed that an arrow 9 can be seen only when it is in an indicating- position. The device comprises a cylindrical casing 1 closed by discs 3 which are made of glass or other transparent material. The indicators consist of discs 7 mounted behind the discs 3 and secured to a spindle 6 which can be turned to the indicating positions by a toothed quadrant 11 operated by a Bowden wire 20 and a coiled spring 22. A disc 7 may be of transparent material which is coated with opaque material except for the light-transmitting areas 9, or the disc may be of stencil form with cut-out portions 9. A fixed opaque screen may be provided between the discs 7 to prevent external light from shining through the device. The lamps 15 may be controlled by a switch operated by the movement of the screens 7.
