Abstract
512,766. Recording and reproducing sound. BAERMANN, M., and DYNAMIT-AKT.-GES. VORM. A. NOBEL & CO. Nov. 30, 1937, No. 33081. Void. Convention date, Nov. 30, 1936. [Class 40 (ii)] Sounds are recorded on finely divided magnetic steel having a permeability of less than 50 and a coercive force of more than 250 oersteds. Steel alloys containing nickel, aluminium, cobalt, chromium, copper &c. are suitable. The particles are preferably between À001 and À005 m.m., and are mixed with a binder which may be a cellulose derivative, or a resinous material, or, when rigid supports are used, may be a metallic material having a lower melting point than the alloy. The composition may be applied as a thin film to cylindrical, disc, or film supports. The record may comprise a non-magnetic strip 1, Fig. 1, and a wider magnetic strip 2, wound spirally together and secured by adhesive, or the magnetic material may be secured spirally to both sides of the disc by adhesives (Fig. 2 and 3 not shown). The recording or reproducing needle, surrounded by a winding, may ride in the grooves between the magnetized ridges, and be carried by a magnetic hood which spans several grooves. Fig. 4 shows a recorder in which the magnetized member 14 and its winding 15 are held in a guide 16 having projections 17 sliding in adjacent grooves. Various methods of forming the record are described.
