Abstract
510,889. Nitrous oxide. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. (Du Pont de Nemours & Co., E. I.). Feb. 9,1938, No. 4094. [Class 1 (ii)] Nitrous cxide is obtained by heating ammonium nitrate to its decomposition temperature in the presence of a solid compound of phosphorus, arsenic, molybdenum, silver or manganese in proportion sufficient to maintain the presence of a small ratio of the compound to the ammonium nitrate. The compound is preferably present in amounts between 0.001 and 2 per cent. by weight. The compounds specified are ortho-phosphoric acid, ammonium dihydrogen orthophosphate, ammonium metaphosphate, diammonium pyrophosphate, trisodium phosphate, disodium phosphate, monopotassium phosphate, barium pyrophosphate, barium hypophosphate, calcium metaphosphate, calcium hypophosphate, calcium pyrophosphate, magnesium acid orthophosphate, phosphorus pentoxide, phosphorus trioxide, iron phosphate, cobalt phosphate, phosphomolybdic acid, ammonium molybdate, arsenous oxide, arsenic oxide, arsenic acid, arsenous acid, sodium arsenite, sodium arsenate, potassium arsenate, ammonium arsenite, calcium arsenate, silver nitrate, and manganous nitrate. Preferably the reaction is conducted so as to maintain a constant ratio between the ammonium nitrate being decomposed and the amount of catalyst present, e.g., by starting with a mixture containing a given amount of catalyst and adding fresh ammonium nitrate continuously or intermittently at the same rate as that at which it is decomposed. The ammonium nitrate may be added in either the solid or molten condition. The ammonium nitrate may be replaced by a mixture of sodium nitrate and ammonium sulphate.
