Abstract

510,840. Filling-machines. BATES INTERNATIONAL BAG CO. Nov. 9, 1938, No. 32495. Convention date, Nov. 26, 1937. [Class 94 (i)] Bags such as valve bags are filled in an apparatus comprising a movable frame with a plurality of spouts, each spout being adapted to enter the valve of a bag, and the frame being movable to present the spouts in succession in line with a stream feed of weighed charges of material. The charges of material are dropped into a hopper 11, Fig. 1, and are fed by a belt 14 and pulley 15 as described in U.S.A. Specification 1,979,483 to a position with which one or other of the spouts 31, 32 is in register. The spouts are carried on a frame 27 suspended by rollers 29 on a frame 28, and reciprocated between two positions by a link 85 on a crankpin 84. In the position shown in Fig. 1 the spout 31 registers with the feed, and a valve bag, which has been placed on it when in the non-registering position, is clamped in position during the feed of the charge by a clamp 35, which is depressed by a resiliently mounted roller 39 on an arm 37 pivoted on the stationary bar 28. Another clamp 36, co-operating with the spout 32, is mounted on the other arm of a lever 33 and is raised by the same action to permit the placing of a bag in position while the first one is being filled. During the filling, the bottom of the bag rests on a saddle 45 provided with a central slot 46 and sloping sides 47. Two saddles are provided, one for each spout, and each saddle is pivoted at 48 on a standard 50 connected to the frame by a pin 52 and lever 53. The lever carries an antifriction roller 55 contacting with a shaft 56 having straight portions 57, Fig. 9, and a displaced portion 58. When at the filling position, the roller 55 corresponding to the spout 31 registers with the displaced portion 58 and a jigging motion is imparted to the saddle. When the bag and saddle are moved away from the filling position the roller registers with a straight portion 52 of the shaft and the jigging stops. At the same time, an arm 63 is raised by a roller 62 carried thereby passing up a stationary slope 68, contacts with a stop 61 on the saddle, and tilts it into a position shown in-broken lines in Fig. 2 and throws the bag off the machine. The machine may be set in motion by a hand lever 102 connected with a half-revolution rocking-key clutch mechanism which rotates the disc 83 carrying the crank arm 85. During this partial rotation, a lug 110 or 111 contacts with a trip member 112 to operate a rod 113 connected with a weighing device, which releases a charge into the hopper 11 so that it will arrive in the spout just after the bag is in the receiving position.
