Abstract

509,980. Moulding lace tips. FAIRE BROS. & CO., Ltd. Nov. 23, 1938, No. 34100. Convention date, June 4. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group VII] Laces are provided with tips of a thermosetting material by a machine consisting of two press members 14, 15, mounted at the centre of rails 19, 20 on which run two tables 26, 28, adapted to be approached and then separated to form a plurality of strands from a single lace. The tables are first tilted about pivots 25, 29, to the positions shown in Fig. 1, by cams 39, 40, and are then moved towards one another by turning handle 45 and hand wheel 49, the latter operating through pulley 47 a hauling wire 51, until toothed edges of the two tables are interengaged, and sets of rollers 32, 33 on the toothed edges have moved past one another as shown in Fig. 9. Two lengths of boot-lace material 73 are then taken centrally past guides 35, 36, and laid between the rollers 32, 33, from the middle of the table 26 outwards after which the carriages 22, 23, are moved apart until a notch in a bar pivoted to the carriage 22 engages with a lug on the axle of carriage 23 thereby forming a number of parallel lengths around the rollers, each length lying over a groove in the lower press-block 15. The tables 26, 28 are then tilted downwardly to bring the lace lengths into the grooves and on to a rubber sponge in a trough 60, a brush-guide 62 is lowered and liquid thermo-setting material is brushed across the lengths of lace, coating each for the width of the slot in the guide. The guide 62 is then raised and the linked carriages moved to the left by means of crank 45, until the coated parts of the laces lie in the grooves of the press-block 15, whereupon the upper block 14 is lowered, a cutter 68, Fig. 6, simultaneously severing the lace lengths, while the heated blocks cause the thermo-setting material to harden. On raising the block 14 again, hooks 72 strip the finished laces from the grooves of the lower block. The thermosetting material may be a synthetic resin or resin base, e.g., from phenol and formaldehyde.
