Abstract
5 0 9 , 3 2 5. Catalysts; motor fuel. MYDDLETON, W. W. Jan. 22, 1938, No. 2167. [Classes 1 (i) and 91] [Also in Group IV] In the synthesis of hydrocarbon oils from carbon-monoxide and hydrogen, an alkali metal carbonate is added to the catalyst and sulphur is introduced with the gases into the reaction chamber. Blue water gas freed from H2S, but still containing organic sulphur compounds equivalent, for example, to 25 grains of sulphur per 100 c. ft., may be passed at 180-210‹ C. over a cobalt catalyst to which potassium carbonate has been added. The motor spirit fraction of the product may be blended with, for example, 20 per cent by volume of benzol and lead tetraethyl. The catalyst may be prepared by mixing a hot solution of cobalt and thorium nitrates with kieselguhr, and adding to a hot solution of potassium carbonate. The precipitate is washed and dried, granulated or pelleted, impregnated with aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic potassium or sodium carbonate and dried. The product may contain, for example, 1.7 or 10 per cent potassium carbonate and is reduced in hydrogen at 350- 400‹ C. Specification 322,284, [Class 1 (i)], is referred to.
