[Class 37] In measuring diffusion speeds, for example, of fluids in viscous or solid substances, such as bitumen, lacquer, &c., wherein the substance is introduced between the electrodes of a condenser and the variations of its dielectric constant measured, the spaces between the electrodes are closely covered on the side or sides to be exposed to the fluid with porous, preferably ceramic material, which may be extended to form a hollow body for the reception of the condenser electrodes with the substance, or the fluid to be diffused therein. A trough 1, Fig. 1, having at least one porous wall contains the substance under test into which the condenser electrodes 2, 3, supported by the trough lid in comb-formation, project. The trough is placed in a vessel 5 containing the diffusing liquid, for example, water. Fig. 2 shows a porous beaker 7 containing the test substance 11 into which project radial condenser electrodes 8, 9, in comb-formation, the beaker being surrounded by the diffusing liquid 10 in a container 12. Alternatively, the electrodes 8, 9 could be secured radially to the outside of the beaker, in which case the beaker would contain the diffusing liquid and be surrounded by the test substance. In another embodiment, the test substance is contained in a metal box 13, Fig. 4, one series of electrodes 16 upstanding from the base thereof. The other series of electrodes 17 are secured to a porous shelf 15 on which the diffusing liquid is placed. Heating resistance wires may be provided in the porous walls to liquify test substances which are solid at normal temperatures.
