Abstract

508,548. Tetrahydrofuranes ; 1.4 butyleme glycol. JOHNSON, G. W. (1. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.) 30, 1937, No. 36128. [Class 2 (iii)] Tetrahydrofuranes are prepared by heating 1.4 butylene glycol or its C-alkyl, aralkyl, cyclo. alkyl or aryl substitution products in the liquid, state with one or more of the solid dehydration catalysts hereinafter specified to such a temperature that the tetrahydrofurane and water distil off.. The catalysts used are oxides of aluminium, zirconium or thorium, sulphates of aluminium and copper, potassium aluminium sulphate, potassium pyrosulphate, phosphates of aluminium, iron, cerium and silver having a neutral reaction, chlorides of magnesium, calcium, zinc and aluminium, silica gel, bleaching earths, organic acids, e.g. oxalic or. p-toluene sulphonic, and. acid anhydrides. The tetrahydrofuranes may be obtained by fractional distillation with or without previous drying. Aqueous solutions of 1.4 butylene glycol, obtained by hydrogenation of butene.2-diol- 1.4 in aqueous solution, may be used. In examples, the glycol is heated with anhydrous chlorides of Al, Zn, Mg, and Ca, p-toluene sulphonic acid, oxalic acid, succinic or maleic anhydride, sulphates of Cu and AI, potassium aluminium sulphate, potassium pyrosulphate, active aluminium oxide, and bauxite, at temperatures 'which vary from 126-205‹ C. Specification 407,035 is referred to.
