Abstract

505,844. Extracting fats from offal, garbage, or other vegetable or animal products. HANESCHKA. H., and VERMES, J. Nov. 17, 1937, No. 31600. Convention date, Nov. 17, 1936. [Class 91] Oils and fats are recovered from animal or vegetable raw materials, especially garbage or offal, by treating at elevated temperature and under pressure with ammonia and primary ammonium phosphate. The aqueous layer containing emulsified fat is separated by centrifuging, leaving an aqueous protein-containing broth which is dried and worked up to form a fodder meal. In an example, 1000 kg. slaughter house garbage, whale flesh, fish offal, cereals, or cattle cake residues, are fed into a container together with 12 to 20 kg. of concentrated ammonia and up to 2 kg. of primary ammonium phosphate. The container is closed and steam introduced to generate a pressure of 3 atmos. After 25 to 40 minutes with stirring there is formed a protein-containing broth in which the fat is emulsified, and free acids are neutralized. If it is desired to digest insoluble proteins or to destroy the protein, the boiling is prolonged to from 1 to 2 hours. Excess of ammonia is blown out and recovered. The aqueous layer is then fed to a centrifuge, from which the fat is recovered, and the aqueous layer is dried to form a fodder meal.
