Abstract
505,156. Utilizing waste rubber. SOC. ITALIANA PIRELLI. Oct. 13, 1938, No. 29732. Convention date, Nov. 26, 1937. [Class 70] Rubber is recovered from scrap vulcanized rubber by impregnating the scrap with a swelling agent until it is friable, grinding.the friable scrap in a ball mill or the like to reduce the rubber to a fine powder and the fibrous material to a condition in which it is readily separable from the rubber, mechanically separating as by sieving the fibres from the rubber powder and recovering the swelling agent from the ground material. The grinding and sieving operations may take place in stages and the grinding mills and sieves closed with gas-tight covers and connected so that a current of inert gas may be passed through the plant to facilitate recovery of the swelling agent. Residual swelling agent in the rubber may be recovered by subjecting the rubber to steam distillation and residual swelling agent in the fibres may be recovered by extraction with solvents. Swelling agents specified are carbon tetrachloride, chlorinated ethylene, benzine, naphthas, carbon disulphide.
