Abstract

504,377. Moulding screw propellers. DE HAVILLAND AIRCRAFT CO., Ltd., and KING, E. P. Sept. 15, 1937, No. 25122. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A hollow airscrew blade is formed from preformed complementary moulded plastic sections, the joint lines of which extend along the leading and trailing edges, the sections being homogeneously united under pressure. The plastic material comprises resinous or similar material of the thermoplastic or thermosetting type such as impregnated fibres of cotton, linen, or wood or laminated sheets of wood veneer and resin. The preformed sections are moulded between pairs of primary and secondary dies produced from a master pattern. As shown, two primary casts 13, 14 are taken of the pattern 10 from which cast iron dies are made. A pattern 15 of one section is then built up on the cast 13 and a secondary cast is taken from which one secondary die is made. A core pattern 117 is then added corresponding to the hollow interior and a second cast is taken from which the other secondary die is made. The two moulded sections are finally united under heat and pressure between the primary dies. During the final moulding a temporary core may be used, such as a fusible metal alloy, granular material such as shot, a soluble salt, or an inflated bag, which core is afterwards removed. Preformed struts 25, Fig. 6, may be incorporated in the blade or a permanent core of expanded rubber. The shank of the blade may be "up-ended" by means of an axially moving end mould. According to the Provisional Specification, the dies may be formed from wooden patterns of the two sections.
