Abstract
504,238. Modulating - - apparatus. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. June 28, 1938, No. 19177. Convention date, July 28,1937. [Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v)] Modulation of an ultra high frequency is effected by varying, in accordance with the modulation, a resonant line which is employed for stabilization of the oscillator. The outer or inner member 15 or 17 of the concentric resonant line 13 is made of magnetostrictive material, and modulation currents from source 23 applied to the solenoid 21 vary the effective length of the line by varying the capacity between the armature 19 and the end of the outer member 15 and, in consequence, the frequency of the oscillator 25 which is coupled to the line is modulated. The member 15 may be slotted to reduce eddy currents. The diaphragm at the end of the line may be bi-metallic, one of the metals being magneto-strictive, Fig. 3 (not shown). A solenoid energized by modulation currents is placed adjacent the diaphragm which bulges and so varies the effective capacity of the line. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also an arrangement in. which the diaphragm is not magneto-strictive and is influenced by a solenoid. carrying an intermediate carrier frequency, amplitude modulated with the signals. Reaction between the magnetic field and eddy current in the diaphragm produce movement of the diaphragm which, however, due to its inertia, is only able to follow the signal frequency variations. In another arrangement, a piezo-electric crystal, whose dimensions are varied by modulating potentials, is employed to vary the capacity between the inner and outer members of the line ; or the end of the outer member of the line may comprise an acoustic diaphragm upon which sound waves are impressed directly. The invention is applicable to the control of the local oscillator of a superheterodyne radio receiver employing automatic tuning; and may be applied to vary the coupling between an oscillator and its load to obtain amplitude modulation. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
