Abstract

502,613. Flywheels. WEBER, C. M. Sept. 21, 1937, No. 25627. (Class 122 (i)] [Also in Groups XXXVIII and XVI] Apparatus for effecting the constant-speed driving of films and similar tape-like material comprises a drum engaging and driven by the film or the like, a flywheel of substantial mass secured to the drum shaft, and a second flywheel also of substantial mass freely mounted on said shaft, the two flywheels being caused to rotate together by means of a constant magnetic connection. In the form shown, a flywheel 20 of magnetic material is firmly secured to the drum-shaft 4, and a second flywheel 21 of non-magnetic material is mounted on the shaft 4 by means of roller bearings and is retained in position by means of a spacing washer 23 and nuts 24. The wheel 21 is provided with a permanentmagnet insert 22, which may be in the form of a ring magnet. According to a modification, the flywheel 21 is mounted between two similar spaced-apart discs secured to the shaft 4, the thickness of each disc being substantially half that of the wheel 20. In this construction, the magnetic coupling members may comprise a number of cylindrical magnets disposed around the periphery of the central flywheel. The masses of the flywheel portions secured to the shaft and freely mounted thereon are substantially equal. Instead of mounting the magnet members on the wheel which is freely rotatable on the shaft, they may be mounted on the wheel secured to the shaft, the freely mounted wheel being constructed of magnetic material.
