[Class 27] Articles stored in piles.-Cartons of ice-cream 10 are stored in a number of side-by-side, columns in a thermally insulated compartment cooled by refrigerant in a container 3. The lowermost carton of each column rests in a cup 14 carried by a delivery drawer 12, the succeeding carton being supported, when the drawer is pulled out, by a spring-actuated stirrup 19 bearing against the rear of the cup 14. A flap 15 rises behind the drawer when open to prevent entry of warm. A single coin mechanism located in a chamber at normal temperature outside the article compartment - controls all the drawers, operation of more than one drawer at time being prevented by a row of blocking elements 16 between which abutments on the drawers pass when pulledout. When the last carton has been removed from a column, a follower weight 31, by means of a connecting chain 32, throws over a lever 34 which actuates a detent to lock the drawer of that column. Articles cut from the mass.-In a modification, a bar of ice-cream rests in each delivery cup 14, and a knife element on the cup cuts a portion off the lower end of the bar on opening the drawer, a stirrup as above supporting the remainder of the bar whilst the drawer is open. Coin action, with stationary coin forming abutment.-The wedge-shaped end of the end blocking element 16<1> engages between a pair of levers 24 pivoted at 25 and drawn together by a spring 26. The upper ends of the levers receive the inserted coin between them. Their lower ends have interengaging fingers 27, 28 to ensure equal movement. Initial opening of a drawer in the absence of a coin causes the blocking element 16<1> to pass between the levers 24 until the levers enter slots at either side of the blocking element near its end and lock it. Further opening movement of the drawer is then prevented. If, however, a coin is present between the levers, they are unable to drop into the slots in the blocking element and the drawer can be opened fully. The blocking element widens beyond its slots so as to force the levers apart at the end of the opening movement to release the coin. The coin mechanism is located in a chamber outside the cooled article compartment. A heat conducting. rod, however, connects the two compartments and its end within the coin mechanism chamber is located near the coin mechanism to prevent condensation of moisture thereon.
